Breaking Barriers: A Deeper Look into the Workforce Landscape of LGBTQ+ Registered Nurses

Updated: Feb 12

Why diversity matters, according to the 2016 Census

In the dynamic tapestry of modern society, the 2016 Census reveals an insightful snapshot of the occupational trends within same-sex couples, shedding light on their participation in the labour force and educational achievements, this is particularly evident amongst LGBTQ+ Registered Nurses.

The data reveals a remarkable shift in gender dynamics, particularly in the most common occupations for women in same-sex couples. Topping the list is Registered Nurse. Following closely are Sales Assistant, Retail Manager, and Secondary School Teacher, showcasing a diverse range of professional pursuits.

Notably, the labour force participation of same-sex couples outshines that of their opposite-sex counterparts. In 2016, a staggering 87% of individuals in same-sex couples were actively engaged in the workforce, compared to 69% in opposite-sex couples. This trend persisted within the working-age population (15-74 years), with figures of 88% and 74%, respectively. The employment percentage for same-sex couples stood at an impressive 84%, significantly surpassing opposite-sex couples at 67%.

Education emerges as a beacon of progress within same-sex couples, with a higher likelihood of partners currently pursuing tertiary studies. An impressive 45% held a Bachelor's degree or higher, compared to 29% in opposite-sex couples. Additionally, 12.4% of individuals in same-sex couples boasted postgraduate degrees, outshining the 6.8% in opposite-sex couples.

Economic empowerment paints a compelling picture, with higher personal incomes for individuals in same-sex couples. Men in same-sex couples were 23% more likely to earn $2,000 or more a week, while women, particularly during peak income earning years (30 to 64), were over twice as likely to earn in this bracket (14% compared to 6%) than their opposite-sex counterparts.

For those navigating workplace challenges related to gender and sexuality, a dedicated support network, LGBTQ+ Nurse and Midwife Support, stands ready. The NSW LGBTIQ+ Health Strategy 2022-2027 spearheads government initiatives, championing inclusivity.
